J and I bought a stroller this weekend - a Maclaren Triumph - and doing so launched us right into a state I’d been hoping to avoid, despite its inevitable onset, and that’s the state of “parents with gear.” We’ve been incredibly fortunate in that we’ve inherited a ton of baby necessities from J’s coworkers, as well as been given so many useful gifts - our carseat, activity mat, bassinet, swing, Pack n’ Play…I mean, everything - and we haven’t really had to shop for much yet, so heading into Babies “R” Us to get something more complicated than diapers, well, it was huge.
We didn’t do that much research besides soliciting a few recommendations from friends, but lucky for us there was a certified stroller expert working at the store that day. Ok, he wasn’t literally certified, but this kid - I think he was about 18 - he knew his stuff. I kind of wanted to invite him over for dinner after hearing him list the most important details for every model, folding and unfolding them, encouraging us to do so ourselves, and all in a very non-salesman way, like, he didn’t care if Babies “R” Us made a cent he just wanted us to have a product that lasted, and for our precious child to be safe.
We got to try the stroller out yesterday walking around the Carroll Gardens neighborhood in Brooklyn with my brother and a few friends after brunch. Looking around, we noticed that the area seemed to be a hotspot for hip couples with kids, and - as if we needed to get any more cocky about our purchase (J was basically doing wheelies, announcing “This stroller is AWESOME”) - we noticed that a bunch of them had the exact same model as us. The very same stroller. We walked proudly on.

Last year we decided to not jump into what we figured was just a trendy, overpriced MacLaren stroller…and instead opted for a cheap, yet still quite functional(we figured) $20 no-name knockoff stroller. It didn’t take more than a few weeks of use for us to realize that we had made a drastic mistake. Just walking with the thing was uncomfortable…hard to steer, you had to hunch to be able to reach the handles to push it, making for a very very uncomfortable walk. This year, I swore I would pay as much as I possibly could to get a good stroller that didn’t make me hate walking with my child…and what did we end up getting? That’s right…a MacLaren.
Best decision we ever made(as far as baby gear goes), and easily worth the extra $100. Definitely a fine piece of engineering. I applaud you on your choice, and I’m glad you didn’t try to get “smart” like we tried to last year.

I will continue my stance I have always had…give me three $20 no-name knockoff strollers and then just tell them to walk after those have worn away or broken down. Heaving heavy equipment around gets old fast.

But if you use all your Babies R Us gift cards the expensive strollers are next to nothing and they are so SHINY and NEW and move so SMOOTHLY. Just saying. You know you want one, E. I don’t know what you’d use it for, but you know you want one.

After Evan was born I made the foolish mistake of purchasing a $600 (you read that correctly) BOB double jogging stroller. The thing is amazing. Seriously. And huge. And bright orange. But Drew won’t sit in it. And I don’t really jog. But it is a nice stroller. I’ll sell it to you for $450.

- it’s Carolina blue colored
- the 18 y.o. salesman reminded me of Jonah Hill
- I saw Lili Taylor with her baby in Brooklyn (from Say Anything, etc.)
- it pivots on a dime
- my only complaint: the straps are really hard to adjust - anyone else find this to be a problem?
