“Sometimes I wonder, if I saw one of my old high school teachers, what would I call them? Like, would I call them Mr. or Mrs. whatever? Or by their first name?”
“I think you’d call them whatever you called them in high school. I think that’s normal.”
“I mean…if I saw one of my old coaches, I’d definitely call them ‘coach.’”
“Sure. Makes sense.”
“One of my coaches, Coach Jacobs, was also my teacher. But he didn’t want us to call him ‘Mr. Jacobs.’ He was like, ‘Call me Coach Jacobs. Or Coach. Or Jake.’”
“Was his first name Jake?”
“No, his last name was Jacobs. And Jake is a nickname for Jacobs.”
“Well, sort of. Except that it’s usually a nickname for Jacob when it’s somebody’s first name. What was his first name?”
“Tom.”

You still call them Mrs. or Mr. so and so…I saw my old band teacher at the grocery store the other day…that was wierd. Even more wierd is that I recognized her by her voice and then was very suprised at her appearance…wouldn’t have recognized her in a million years by sight alone. Good thing she commented on a can of soup!

Everyone calls him Jake. His wife even calls him Jake. I don’t know about his children, though.

I had a backwards version of this as a teacher’s kid…I called them by their first name, or, in some cases, by a nickname, before they were my teachers! So, in high school, I tried not to really call them anything when they were actually my teachers. I would avoid all names and pronouns because it felt weird.

This situation actually involved Justin talking to me about a Coach Jake he had in high school, although I did mention to him that we had a Coach Jake, too. But I always thought our Coach Jake was actually named Jake…Perhaps this phenomenon is more widespread than I’d imagined.

I had a similar situation with what to call my friends’ parents now that I’m 52! One friends’ mom insists I call her Pat. Just cannot do it! She will always be Mrs. Anderson to me.
By the way Cara I am your Aunt Betsey’s friend Denise (we grew up on Flintlock Rd. together) and for the record your Grandmom will always be Mrs. Mullan to me. Your blog is so funny! good luck w/your upcoming delivery.
