The need to relax while in the midst of packing hundreds of heavy books
Posted by Cara under generalAfter the excitement of celebrating J’s PhD, having family and friends in town and traveling up to D.C. to see even more friends at a big party this weekend died down, I found myself sitting in my parents’ house in Alexandria Sunday, absolutely exhausted. So, even though it was about 100 million degrees outside, I decided to take a bath. My parents have a fairly big bathtub and, even better, have a rather incredible assortment of bath products - so many a person could really get caught up trying them all out. Bath salts? Sure. Foot scrub? Definitely.
Most of this stuff is sitting around unused, since my parents aren’t really the bath types. They’re more the quick shower, coffee and get moving types, which, honestly, I like better too, but every once in a while it’s nice to do something totally unnecessary and relaxing like breathing in the scents of aromatherapy crystals or, you know, whatever you’ve got at your disposal.
The other thing that was so great about my Sunday afternoon, was that it was the first time in a while I’d been completely alone.
Give me the choice between a quiet night in by myself and a loud party with hundreds of friends and strangers and I’ll take the party nine times out of 10, so when I feel like I want to be alone, I really need it. So, since J was off gallivanting at the local wildlife preserve and marsh, looking for another bird species to add to his Life List, I played around with some really expensive facial exfoliant and took a nice long soak in the bathtub. I mean, it wasn’t that long, because, seriously, it’s hot as hell outside, but still, it was exactly what I needed.
Doing things like that for yourself every once in a while really makes a difference, and now that we’re really on the brink of moving (August 29) and haven’t, ah, really done any sort of substantial packing, and are thinking about houses and jobs and money and driving the moving truck, I’m going to have to remember to take a break every now and then so I don’t, you know, lose it. Beat people up.
So I thought maybe in the comments section people could share their favorite ways to relax. Anything, because I know mine range from the really simple, like watching the Food Network, to the really extravagant, like getting an $100 massage.
Even though I’m using my current state of mind as a springboard, it’s not all for my benefit. I figure everyone feels better when they hear that other people get anxious and need to de-stress every now and then. It always makes me feel good to hear people’s tips, recipes, etc. after I write a post. That’s one of my favorite things about writing a blog…the feeling of connectivity with all these people.
So let’s hear it. I’ll start - A good glass of wine at the end of the day. What? You didn’t think I didn’t know about that one already, did you?

OK, I’ll start…I pay 500 bucks a month to a private golf course to not golf with anyone or be around anyone with a beer in the cooler built into my bag.
I am a freak there because I just want to be by myself. I don’t want to do anything other than just screw around on the golf course, walk, and enjoy nature. I am not networking, nor do I care what others think of the fact I am the club loner/mystery.
And then I sit in the whirlpool, take a hard shower, use all their products, and head home.
Never joined the men’s club, don’t play tournements, don’t really care. That’s the relaxing to me. And it’s why I can’t wait until Big A gets back in school because my routine will be normal again.
Shhhh…don’t tell anyone. :)

if you check out the post time, i am not the model of relaxation. as i am just starting my phd program and working full-time, i am sure you can understand.
i still rely on running to relax me. it gives me time to think or to not think. the endorphins from long runs make me feel better, and after the shower, i am usually exhausted afterwards so i curl up for a nap with my cat.
i have never been a bath person. too much sitting still–and in your own dirt.
btw, cara and jennifer: coach fred (a.k.a. mr. handel) had a job interview with a friend of mine the other day.

Nordstroms. Banana Republic. Target. Anywhere that takes Visa. Usually there are some beers in there too. MAYBE a Jager bomb.

i personally love baths. i’ve had many people say it grosses them out cause they feel like they are sitting in their own dirt, but i take them to relax, not get clean so usually i will take one after i am already showered or haven’t done anything to get myself all sweaty and gross. the best thing in the world to me is drinking a glass of white wine while reading a great book in a warm bubble bath (i like having the cool white wine to offset the heat of the bath ;). decadent.
an idea for you though, especially considering that your house will very soon be devoured by packing boxes, is that you should take time when you get stressed to LEAVE the house and go to a solitary place with a good book. there are some awesome koi ponds near my house and a lagoon not far that are great places for just sitting and reading or staring at nothing and being alone. it’s wonderful. if you can find a place like that around you (maybe the botanical gardens we visited when i was in town! :) and can just find a quiet bench to read or people watch and forget about everything else i think it will help retain your sanity during the hectic moving process. good luck!!!

A guitar and a front porch…that’s all it takes.

I agree with Tom - maybe throw a beer in there.

The guitar and the beer sound very good… but could you add a little (just a little) percussion?

Massage, haircut, pedicure, manicure… love going to the spa. Ice skating helps too.
